This may be impossible to make said by a few scientist but with everything said in the past a different outcome may be in the future. It may take awhile but if there is another invention the complete quantum timer could be possible, but for now the atomic timers has the capability of telling time in the way of a quantum timer.
Time in some atomic clocks are known as quantum clocks because it measures quantum fluctuations in the same way, they are considered the most precise time instruments created. The idea of creating a complete quantum timer is said to be impossible because if a system did it would have a infinite amount of negative energy and having that amount of energy is impossible in our world.
The idea of telling time can be very different because with a quantum watch you do not count to tell time but use fingerprints to tell time. The fingerprints works by the amount of time that has passed since that the wave packets was formed and provided an assurance that the time is correct. This is useful to measure ultra short intervals of time, this means time on the femtosecond scale. One femtosecond is also 0.000,000,000,000,001 second, it may seem very short but the electrons can travel a good amount of distance in that time frame, this means alot of chemical reactions takes place on that time frame, which means you can precisely record the behavior of electrons.
The invention of a way to tell time accurate is important to the the secrets of the atoms that surround us. This picture above shows an extremely cold gas of strontium atoms that is trapped in a web of light known as an optical lattice. The atoms are in an ultra high vacuum environment, this has no air or other gas present. This vacuum helps to preserve the atom. The red dot is the laser used to trap the atom in its state. To trap and measure tens and thousands of atoms simultaneously is a huge advantage in the precision in the measurement of time. The more atoms measured the more data the clock has for the measurement of that second. I believe it is possible for us to achieve a complete quantum timer but the technology for the quantum timer will take a while.
