New Technological robotic caterpillar that can make its own bridge

In partnership with

Scientists has unveiled a robotic caterpillar, it is made to mimic caterpillar in nature, moving in all directions going over obstacles and even stretching over gaps to make a bridge for themselves.

The Caterpillar inspired robot often utilizes the principles of local curvature, where the robot body bends in different directions to to control its movement forward. These robots are made from soft materials like liquid crystal elastomers.

The Caterpillar robots are made to be used in various fields like search and rescue, medical technology and being able to navigate through tight spaces. Although in its infant stage this technology is planned to explore planets in space because of its ability to go anywhere even over gaps.

These research are being tested at the north Carolina State University which uses silver nanowires to control heat distribution and movements, with further testing the idea for this robotic caterpillar will be a good technology for scientists because it can be used in multiple fields.
